Live Screen Readings Series

The QTLI Live Screen Reading Series is an annual flagship event in Toronto that takes unproduced queer and trans screenplays off the page and brings them to life on a live stage.

Performed by professional actors in front of an invited audience of producers, directors, agents, community leaders, peers, and storytellers. This series is designed to give the work more visibility, momentum, and creative support.

Every reading is followed by a reception with drinks, conversation, and the chance to meet with people invested in queer and trans stories.

The Inaugural Reading:

To launch the series, QTLI’s inaugural reading of, THEY, an original feature screenplay, will be scheduled for a live stage reading for invited guests toward the end of October, 2026! Stay tuned for more info.

Future Screenplay Readings:

Following our launch event, QTLI will open a call to 2SLGBTQ+ writers.

We are looking for unproduced screenplays that reflect the depth, honesty, joy, realities, and power of queer and trans stories.

What We Accept

  • Format: Unproduced feature-length screenplays (approx. 80–120 pages) or original TV pilots (60 pages, or two 30 page scripts).

  • Eligibility: Open to 2SLGBTQ+ writers residing in Toronto, Canada.

  • Status: Scripts must be original and fully owned by the writer.

What the Selected Writer Receives

  • A fully cast, professional live staged reading performed by Canadian actors at a Toronto venue.

  • Direct exposure to invited industry guests, peers, and community members.

  • Audience feedback, and community celebration at the post-reading reception.

Why:

Getting independent film and television projects made is notoriously difficult, especially for trans and queer storytellers. Hearing a script read out loud by skilled performers reveals the heart of the story, helps us see what is working, or how it might be changed to elevate the writing. It builds immediate audience feedback and support for 2SLGBTQ+ writers and performers, and hopefully builds confidence and the recognition we deserve.

Because we need more avenues to showcase out work.

Because it’s fun!

Submissions for our next cycle will open soon. Guidelines and deadlines will be announced for the second live screenplay reading in 2027.
